MAYWEATHER-ORTIZ PREVIEW by Bob Mutter
Posted on Sep 11 2011

Victor Ortiz was impressive when he defeated Andre Berto, but Berto is no Floyd Mayweather Jr. So don't expect the same result, even though Ortiz made a tremendous leap in ability between the early part of his career and the Berto victory.
Ortiz even looked different when he approached the ring for his most recent win. In previous fights, he looked like a college kid about to pull a prank. As he jogged to the ring before upsetting Berto, he looked like a man -- a man with a mission.
If he improves as much as he did between being held to a draw by Lamont Peterson in December and decisioning Berto in April, he'll have a bit of a chance. Unfortunately for him, his opponent will be perhaps the finest fighter in the world today. And "Money" doesn't take any chances. If he did, we'd be talking about Mayweather-Pacquiao instead of Mayweather-Ortiz.
This probably isn't even a pay-per-view quality fight, but it's hard to turn away from a Mayweather match, simply because he's so damned good. Ortiz will have to take a lot of chances in order to land a big punch, and we can count on him to do that. But the slapdown he'll receive for every chance he takes probably will discourage him before too many rounds have gone by. Then we won't have to wait for the minute between rounds to refresh our beverage. Viewers won't mind missing a few seconds of this fight.
THEDON NOTE: Bob Mutter is a boxing writer of the finest caliber and we are pleased he consented to grant us the pleasure of presenting this story.

THE THRILLA IN MANILA DOCU ON HBO
Posted on Apr 22 2009

I really think this is revisionist history. In order to make a new documentary, you get one guy to say something controversial and then build around it with a bunch of clips. Given that logic, Benny Paret really went to far with Griffith, but is Emile a murderer? Ali did the same kind of thing to several opponents, in an attempt to psyche himself up or those out. Even if it was racist or just mean spirited, the slant HBO uses is to create something that was not intended in the moment. Hindsight is one thing, editing is another.

Hello Fight Fans
Posted on Mar 09 2009

NOTE FROM THEDON: I ASKED THERESA KURTH, OUR CONCESSIONS MANAGER, TO WRITE A SHORT ARTICLE ON OUR T-SHIRTS. SURPRISINGLY, THIS IS WHAT SHE SUBMITTED.

Every month you all walk past the sports memorabilia table where Don and I are usually sitting. Most people stop by to say hello to Don, a few even stop to say hi to me, but not many actually check out the merchandise. Oh some of you will promise me that you’ll be back later to look around, but unless I hunt those people down, they generally don’t come back. So I thought I would take a moment and explain to all of you exactly WHY you should stop by the table. We have a wide variety of sports memorabilia, big and small, autographed and not autographed, for all ages. But we also have a selection of THEDON t-shirts. I greatly appreciate the support from those who already have t-shirts, but for those of you who don’t, I’m going to let you in on a little secret. That t-shirt is much more than just a piece of cotton with a logo on it. That t-shirt represents years of hard work by Don and his late father Jerry, to make Fight Night what it is today. Don and Jerry have been working with fighters for years to help improve them in the ring, and in life. That t-shirt is a symbol for the company that has created the longest running boxing show in the Midwest, for all ages and all skill levels. This show is a great opportunity for novice fighters to almost-pro fighters to showcase their talent. But most of all, that t-shirt represents all the dedication and passion that Don and Jerry have shown in this industry for the entirety of their careers. So next time you walk by the memorabilia table, instead of giving a wave and a promise to come back later, stop by for a look and a chat with me. I promise you, it will be worth your while.

GOLDEN GLOVES PART I
Posted on Sep 10 2007

THE GREATEST AND MOST HONEST SPORT THERE IS IS THE SPORT OF AMATEUR BOXING. UNLIKE PROFESSIONAL BOXING, WHERE MANY OF THE BOUTS ARE MISMATCHES DUE TO THE PROMOTER AND MATCHMAKER WHO TRY TO BUILD UP THEIR TICKET SELLER AND THE PEOPLE REGULATING PROFESSIONAL BOXING ARE FOR THE MOST PART POLITICALLY APPOINTED, AMATEUR BOXING BOUTS ARE EVENLY MATCHED AND THE PEOPLE RUNNING AMATEUR BOXING HAVE ALL BEEN IN THE GAME SINCE THEIR TEEN AGE YEARS AND DO SO FROM THEIR HEART AS THEY RECEIVE NO PAY.

THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS BOXING TOURNAMENT IS THE GOLDEN GLOVES TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS WHERE THE OPEN CHAMPIONS GO ON TO PARTICIPATE IN THE NATIONAL GOLDEN GLOVES OF AMERICA TOURNAMENT WHICH CONSISTS OF 32 CITIES (FRANCHISES) FROM AROUND THE USA INCLUDING

THE 1981 CHICAGO HAD TWO WINNERS IN TOLEDO, OHIO 132 LB. PRIMO RAMOS OF THE CYO & 178 LB. JOHNNY WILLIAMS OF THE WINDY CITY GYM.

CHICAGO DID NOT HAVE A WINNER AGAIN UNTIL THE 1987 TOURNAMENT HELD IN KNOXVILLE, TN WHEN TERRY MCGROOM OF THE MATADOR BOXING CLUB BEAT THE DEFENDING CHAMPION HARVEY RICHARDS FOR THE 178 LB. CHAMPIONSHIP.
MCGROOM ALSO WON THE 1988 IN OMAHA, NE, 1989 WHEN IT RETURNED TO KNOXVILLE & 1992 WHEN IT WAS HELD AT THE ROSEMONT HORIZON BUT HE REPRESENTED SPRINGFIELD, IL 1992 ANTHONY STEWART OF THE MATADOR BC WON THE 165 LB. CHAMPIONSHIP.

1993 THE TOURNAMENT WAS HELD IN LITTLE ROCK, AK WHERE A 16 YEAR OLD DAVID DIAZ OF HAMLIN PARK WON THE 139 LB. TITLE.. DAVID ALSO WON THE 139 LB. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AT MILWAUKEE, WI IN 1994 AND 1996 HE WON WHEN IT WAS HELD IN CLEVELAND, OHIO.
