RUNNING THE STREETS
Posted on Aug 11 2008 Visiting our sponsors on a Sunday afternoon is always a fun thing to do. We suggest you try it sometime. Pizza by the slice at Joe's Italian Villa, ice cream from Lindy's & Gertie's and a drink at Venetian Gardens, a little something at the Dirty Sock, etc. Food and drinks galore with fun people and some new friends. Followed by a nap. We definitely don't run like we used to. You always gitta you filla
Posted on Jul 21 2008 If you don't know what we are talking about by now, you have not made it to Joe's Italian Villa in Bridgeview. The food is great and our friends there are first rate, so what a surprise when a recent stop proved to be filled with laughs and good food. Also, Joey was in rare form talking about the "awesome" Who special on VH1 and the "Awesome" Leftovers show Mr. Caprio and Co. put over the weekend. Out Late Night
Posted on Jun 09 2008 If you happen to be running the streets on a Saturday night, stop out and see our friend Deanna at CC's Grove out on Kean Ave. She serves great Jager and plays a mean jukebox!!! To all our boxing friends in Florida
Posted on Apr 05 2008 Spread the word! Recently got this email from our old friend John Daddano, who wrote: With pleasure we would like to thank each and everyone of you for your patience during the construction phase of the brand new Jupiter Boxing Club & Martial Arts Training Center in the heart of exclusive Jupiter, Florida. Now that construction has ceased, we look forward to providing you with a state of the art facility which not only includes boxing, kickboxing and martial arts but also some of today's finest weightlifting and exercise equipment that the fitness industry has to offer. As we move into our operation mode, we would like to invite you to visit us at our new location which opens Monday, April 7, 2008. Temporary hours of operation are from 8:30am until 7:30pm, Monday thru Saturday. The Jupiter Boxing Club & Martial Arts Training Center is located at 115 1st Street, Jupiter, FL 33458. For further information regarding directions, classes, schedule and rates please call (561) 743-1400 or visit our website at www.jupiterboxingclub.com. Sincerely, John Daddono President Jupiter Boxing Club & Martial Arts Training Center Best of luck, Sky Hook! LINDY'S AND GERTIE'S ARE BOTH KNOCKOUTS!
Posted on Apr 05 2008 Our buddy Rich W. from Lindy's and Gerties's in Bridgeview loves serving Delicious Chili and fantastic Ice Cream "Creations". Not only that, but he takes pride in being an official Fight Night sponsor, so why don't you stop by and say hi at 7208 W. 87th St. Like you really needed a reason for a Banana Split.... COME & PLAY AT FULL TILT POKER
Posted on Mar 31 2008 If any of you are addicted to hold 'em, and we know a few are, check out FULLTILTPoker.net, where you can find us looking like an angry Mike Tyson and playing under the appropriate name of THEDONBOXING. It is a sickness... Using Your Noodle
Posted on Mar 30 2008 A short note for our friends who like to go out for a night of live music. Check out the website for our friends The Dancing Noodles, appropriately enough www.thedancingnoodles.com. Just like the band, the website is a good time as well. John Collins Speaks!
Posted on Mar 30 2008 We boxing fans don't like to get all dressed up for fancy nights out, but I put on a clean Fight Night Boxing Gear shirt and stepped out to the Beverly Arts Center for a screening of the documentary "Saviours", which focused on the lives of three amateur boxers in Ireland. Afterwards, a panel discussion featured Irish John Collins, our dear friend who once again proved why he let his fists do the talking. A great film, a fun night and a wonderful place full of events for our community. Check out the website www.beverlyartcenter.org for info on upcoming events. Tickets at Joe's Italian Villa
Posted on Mar 30 2008 It is always fun to see our friends at Joe's, but recentlywe got to meet new friends because of Joe's. A long standing ticket location for Fight Night at the Sabre Room, Joe's will have a big crowd at our April 30th brawl with new customers ordering extra tickets. A special thanks to the place where "you always gitta you filla" for helping keep Fight Night going strong! Venetian Gardens Meet and Greet
Posted on Mar 28 2008 Had a great time hanging with our friends at Venetian Gardens but that is never a surprise. With the lovely Angie behind the bar and friends like Steve O and John the Heineken man to hang with a good time is assured. Now if we can just get Sammy out of the kitchen long enough to tell a few stories. Well, I guess it is a good thing to have the big guy in charge on the line at "The Home of the Surf & Turf". WE'RE TALKING BOXING HERE
Posted on Dec 16 2007 Getting the word out for the 3rd Anniversary Brawl at the Sabre Room on January 30th, taking the time to bring tickets to Joe's Italian Villa and Venetian Gardens, two places that always get the best seats in the house on Fight Night. Also, a visit was mandatory to see our friends at JC's Ristorante in McCook. Food, drinks, fun of all kinds... and we call this work! THEDON's New Clothes
Posted on Oct 15 2007 Promoter Don Lenza relies primarily on shirts from his sponsors advertising their businesses. Imagine his delight with the new Evil Clown Otis Automotive shirt and "You Always Gitta You Filla..." jacket. Now all he needs is a Dirty Sock hat and the fall wardrobe will be complete (hint to Jeff)... ANOTHER SALLY SUNDAY
Posted on Oct 02 2007 After watching the Bears(ugh) and talking boxing at Joe's Italian Villa, what better way to end a day than spend it with Sally at Grove Sports Bar, where Tony led a clinic on how to be a Cub fan while Al did quality control on a little Black Sambuca... THEDON LOVES NEW SPONSORS
Posted on Sep 24 2007 Fight Night at the Sabre Room could not have become the most successful amateur boxing showcase in the Midwest without the help of our fans and our sponsors, so it is with great joy and much thanks that we welcom Fair Share Amusements and McVady Family Chiropractic to Team Fight Night. I promise I will hurt my back moving a jukebox... Buca Bar Revisited
Posted on Sep 24 2007 Just in case you haven't learned, we love food and drink. Bartenders are like Santa Claus, you ask them for things and they bring them to you. But it is almost too much like Christmas when guys visit Sam Buca's, where the Buca Bar has more pretty women on both sides of the bar than you can shake a candy cane at... Rock and Roll Daze
Posted on Sep 24 2007 Anybody that wants to see a cool party band and loves Cheeseburger In Paradise, Check out Joey Derus and The Catch as they perform at Parrothead Central (get your dates at CATCHSUBLIME.com). Also, Scourge and Stones Throw will tear up Champs Rock Room on October 13th and don't miss our buddy Kent and all his friends jamming at the Hideaway in Blue Island on Thursdays. Rocco Made Us Do It
Posted on Sep 24 2007 Anybody that knows Rocco Greco from Rocco's Little Italy on 159th knows he never made anybody do anything, but when we started drinking Heniekens at the bar we proceeded to enjoy them until we saw green all the next day. It could have been Uncle Bert making sure we still could drink those green bottled beauties... FIGHT NIGHT DATE CHANGES!!!
Posted on Sep 24 2007 Due to circumstances beyon our control, Fight Night at the Sabre Room is taking an extra week off. Our next big show will be on Wednesday November 7th and our year end extravaganza will be on Wednesday, December 5th. Mark you calendars and we will see you at Fight Night! The Clown, The Chimp and The Don
Posted on Sep 24 2007 All you have to do to get mentioned in Outside the Ropes is invite us somewhere. So when Joey the Pizza Chimp invited us to Otis' house to watch the Bears, he got a free plug for Joe's Italian Villa and Otis Automotive. We got free food and drinks, but thats the way we like to roll. Ring Card Girl Wins Title
Posted on Sep 24 2007 The lovely and talented Jezebel St. Savage, a resident polekitty from Polekatz and alumnus of the Fight Night Ring Card Girl Academy, recently was awarded the title of Best Dancer in the Miss Midwest Showgirl competition. To answer the two pressing questions, yes, that is her real name AND, we dutifully sat through the competition to bring you this news. And you thought it was easy work wriiting this column... Sam the Man
Posted on Sep 24 2007 Anyone that doubted our friend Sam from Venetian Gardens had the heart of a champion was proved wrong when he successfully passed a bypass operation. WE are all in Sammy's corner pulling for him, just like he has always been there for his friends at Fight Night... It's Never Too Early
Posted on Sep 14 2007 Being attentive to our duties, we found our way to Polekatz, the official home for the ring card girls from Fight Night at the Sabre Room, for lunch one day, just to be sure they had posters and postcards for our upcoming event. After conducting our business in a prompt and efficient fashion we left and returned to work at 7:30. Just kidding, but boy, it's tough to leave that place... It's Good to be The Don!
Posted on Sep 14 2007 In case you do not know, we love what we do. Recently promoter Don Lenza showed his bar savvy by buying the house a round at Spirits in Hickory and then drinking all the Jagermeister in the building. Before everyone gets excited, there were only three customers and the Jagermeister cooler ran out after just half a shot! Who says we don't know how to party... GETTING READY FOR 30!!!
Posted on Aug 20 2007 Our travels as we prepared for our thirtieth Sabre Room extravaganza have gained us new insight into some interesting characters. Website guru Brian Hanna and his band Scourge played JT's Music, while Joey Derus and The Catch put Paddywackers in a Sublime state of mind. When we weren't doing the music thing, we ran into friend's like Chick and R.C. over at Big Guy's and also hung out with MIke and Bob from table #2 at Pelican Harry's. IT ain't easy having this much fun. Running the Streets
Posted on Aug 12 2007 Been remiss in what has been called my "drinking diary", but there is food and music involved, too. A recent visit to JT Music saw Scourge take the stage, prepping for a gig at Stage 83. Also, good to see Angie (see pic of her in action) and talk boxing with Sam and Co. over at Venetian Gardens in Bridgeview. ![]() Finally, that was crazy Ricky eating perch at the Dirty Sock, saying he was getting ready for a hot dog eating contest. I think he just liked the perch. I kinda like the Smirnoff Raw Tea... Notes from Coach's Corner
Posted on Aug 01 2007 Jerry Castro must love seeing his name in print, otherwise why would he spend so much time with THEDON president Don Lenza. Leading up to August 5th Showdown, Jerry wanted to talk about everything from seats to tickets to wristbands and tables. Can't wait until Jerry wants to promote more shows, because Frank usually feeds us or lets us drink Coronas... Tired and Lonely Boxing Promoter Seeks Fun:
Posted on Jul 19 2007 Got to see the Lovely Erin at the Dirty Sock (she made us write this), John Collins left me at Kenny's, had to leave the Homestead to make it to JR's Seafood before they closed. It seems that either I have to go, they gotta leave or somebody's doing something. I'm exhausted and don't get to spend time with anybody. Waaaa.... From the Buca Bar
Posted on Jul 16 2007 While watching the Cubbies win another one, we found out that Vito Zatto will be appearing August 2nd at Sam Buca's in Palos Heights. This is a great party for those of you who have not seen Vito at Buca's and always a reason to go to dinner, too. We saw a guy with a giant bowl of fettucini alfredo, but he wasn't going to share... We Love the Internet
Posted on Jul 12 2007 Besides the obvious reasons, and in spite of My Space and Al Gore, the WWW is OOOkay with us. Besides our incredibly exciting new THEDONBOXING.com, you can also check out the new SpiritsLounge.com. It's as fun as the bar without all the drinks, the music, karoake, darts, hot girls, kind and lovely Bartenders(who get us our drinks), and all the friendly customers. Now that we think about it, turn off the computer and let's go to Spirit's in Hickory... On the Road...Again
Posted on Jul 12 2007 Thanks to our friends at Otis Automotive, that friendly place with the evil clown face, THEDON is back up and running the streets. If you see us out and about, it is because Otis and the boys fixec the entire THEDON fleet and kept us going day and night. So now you know who to blame... A Good Day
Posted on Jul 10 2007 Is there anything better than enjoying a cold beverage on a hot summer day while hanging out with the guys? The answer is definitely no when you get to sit at Pelican Harry's with Marty, Mike and Bob talking about the Homer Summer Slugfest. It hardly even seems like work when Kristin is behind the bar. I love beautiful women with alcohol... HAPPY BIRTHDAY USA!
Posted on Jul 04 2007 On behalf of everyone involved in our humble endeavors, may we wish you and yours a fun, safe and happy fourth of July from everyone at THEDON. Here's hoping your day is a Knockout! Out Promoting...Again
Posted on Jun 30 2007 Thanks to all our friends and their kind words about Fight Night, THEDONBOXING.com and Fight Night Video. The kind words we were met with at Joe's Italian Villa, JC's Ristorante, and Venetian Gardens were really no surprise. These are places that have us since the beginning and are nice to everybody. STop by and say hi, and also find out about upcoming fight night info WHAT HAPPENS AT THE VILLA
Posted on Jun 27 2007 Lest our vanity get the best of us, often we are approached by fans, friends and strangers because of the success of Fight Night. Anyone who witnessed our encounter with an overzealous new friend at Joe’s Italian Villa in Bridgeview better keep their mouth shut Thanks for keeping me waiting Joey… RUNNING THE STREETS:
Posted on Jun 25 2007 From Surf & Turf at the Venetian Gardens to hanging with Drew & Artie at JC’s Ristorante in McCook, The Chicago Ridge Rumble at Grove Sports Bar to a car show with the Miller Girls at Coach’s Corner in Orland, or even steaks at Krapil’s in Worth to drinking with Joey Derus with Monica the bartender at the Buca Bar at Sam Buca’s in Palos Heights, we kept up the pace at lived pretty good this month. Did we mention the new Durbin’s on Kedzie, Murphy’s Down Under in Hodgkins or hangin’ with Mark at Spirit’s in Hickory (Paula who?)? Oh yeah, and ask Dennis at the Valley Inn about the picture of him and his brother… STARTING FIGHTS ALL OVER THE PLACE
Posted on Jun 25 2007 The best and the brightest of today’s amateur boxing scene are seen month in and month out at Fight Night at the Sabre Room, but as summer rolls along, get ready for our Showdown at Coach’s Corner, and event with our new amigo Jerry Castro, set for August 5th in Orland Park. Also, the Homer Summer Slugfest will not only give our boxer’s a chance to show their skills, but will allow us to help raise money for extracurricular sports and scholarships for athletes in the Homer area. The Slugfest takes place at Lockport Township High School on August 11th. See Fight Night Magazine, or THEDONBOXING.COM for more information Rock & Roll Day
Posted on Jun 22 2007 Beside our love of boxing, THEDON also loves to rock and manages locals bands and artists. On a recent evening of rocking and rolling, THEDON artist original rockers' Scourge played Champs Rock Room, Joey Derus' sensational Sublime tribute band "the Catch" (the newest addition to THEDON's artist roster) partied at Paddywackers on 87th and our friends Defining Silence were over at the Vine in Chicago Ridge. Always a good day when live music is playing at your local bar... OTR MAY 30TH
Posted on Jun 21 2007 THE BEST WE CAN DO IS KEEP PUNCHING: We know that summer brings a lot of graduations and barbecues, but don’t forget that we run Fight Night at the Sabre Room every month. Also this summer brings The Chicago Ridge Rumble on June 10th and Homer Summer Slugfest on August 11th. Help us keep amateur boxing going strong by bringing a friend to these events. THE BEST WE CAN DO IS KEEP ROCKING: When we are not watching the hits in the ring, THEDON is also managing to have local bands hit the stage, including shows on June 1st with Odonrot and June 22nd with Scourge, both performing at Champs Rock Room in Burbank. Scourge will also bring an all ages show to Stage 83 in Lemont on June 15th so all the young people can listen to the rock and roll, too… GREAT STEAK AND CONVERSATION TOO: For the two people reading this who have never been to the legendary steak joint that is Krapil’s, try to control your laughter when you see just how large a small steak is here. Also, there should be a two drink minimum in this place just for the conversations at the bar…HOP ON THE BUS, GUS: Besides the great food at Jenny’s in Chicago Ridge, they also are running some bus trips to keep this summer fun. Besides the Sox/Yankees trip on 6/6, they also are taking me to Arlington Park, the Sox/Red Sox and the Sox vs. Cleveland. Also the August Gleneagles golf outing and a December Jersey Boys bus trip. You’re your plans while having a drink at the bar…MAKE A NEW PLAN, STAN: Our boxing events at the Sabre Room have been the best we have ever seen let alone promoted, and more than a little credit goes to the venue. When planning your next party of any size, our friends at the Sabre Room do a great job. Check out one of their special events or have your next one there…SO MANY DRINKS SO LITTLE TIME: My father once asked if there was anyone I knew who wasn’t a bartender. This month’s beverage stops included the legendary Pump Room in Worth, Harte’s at 99th and Artesian, Zante’s on Roberts Road and Quigley’s on 111th. Just trying to keep the pour folks in bizness…SOCK IT TO ME: lest you think we drink to much, recent stops at the Dirty Sock on Roberts Rd. in Hickory found us enjoying single serving beverages rather than those monster towers o’ beer. If you don’t know what we are talking about, stop in and see Jeff and Chuck… HEY, THERE’S LADIES HERE: besides being one of our favorite lines from Mel Brooks’, this line is also an accurate description of the Buca Bar on a recent trip to Sam Buca’s. I don’t know how else to say it, but there were more hotties here than a Costa Rican beach party… STOPPED BY AND SAID HI: Sometimes we take for granted that everyone knows about some of our favorite stops but we also frequent some places that while old favorites to us you gotta try. Not the least of these include JC”S Ristorante in McCook, Venetian Gardens in Bridgeview, Joe’s Italian Villa on Harlem and Jack Gibbon’s Gardens out on Oak Park at 147th. These places are all long standing institiution and must be tried…STILL GOTTA GET THERE: We stop at as many bars, restaurant, businesses, friends houses, synagogues and public libraries as we can, so if we haven’t made it to you lately, come see us or give us a call at 708-704-5234. It works both ways, y’know… |
