Posted on Sep 11 2011 Victor Ortiz was impressive when he defeated Andre Berto, but Berto is no Floyd Mayweather Jr. So don't expect the same result, even though Ortiz made a tremendous leap in ability between the early part of his career and the Berto victory. Ortiz even looked different when he approached the ring for his most recent win. In previous fights, he looked like a college kid about to pull a prank. As he jogged to the ring before upsetting Berto, he looked like a man -- a man with a mission. If he improves as much as he did between being held to a draw by Lamont Peterson in December and decisioning Berto in April, he'll have a bit of a chance. Unfortunately for him, his opponent will be perhaps the finest fighter in the world today. And "Money" doesn't take any chances. If he did, we'd be talking about Mayweather-Pacquiao instead of Mayweather-Ortiz. This probably isn't even a pay-per-view quality fight, but it's hard to turn away from a Mayweather match, simply because he's so damned good. Ortiz will have to take a lot of chances in order to land a big punch, and we can count on him to do that. But the slapdown he'll receive for every chance he takes probably will discourage him before too many rounds have gone by. Then we won't have to wait for the minute between rounds to refresh our beverage. Viewers won't mind missing a few seconds of this fight. Every month you all walk past the sports memorabilia table where Don and I are usually sitting. Most people stop by to say hello to Don, a few even stop to say hi to me, but not many actually check out the merchandise. Oh some of you will promise me that you’ll be back later to look around, but unless I hunt those people down, they generally don’t come back. So I thought I would take a moment and explain to all of you exactly WHY you should stop by the table. We have a wide variety of sports memorabilia, big and small, autographed and not autographed, for all ages. But we also have a selection of THEDON t-shirts. I greatly appreciate the support from those who already have t-shirts, but for those of you who don’t, I’m going to let you in on a little secret. Posted on Jan 25 2009 Anyone within hearing of THEDON President Don Lenza in the past month has probably heard him sing the praises of Antonio Margarito and disparage the chances of Sugar Shane Mosley in yesterday's showdown at the Staples Center. Once again showing what a genius he is, Lenza gave Mosley no chance of winning the fight. Consequently it should come to no surprise to anyone that Mosley beat Margarito handily in every round and knocked him senseless en route to a ninth round stoppage. Mr. Lenza prides himself on his handicapping abilities and his knowledge of ring history. It is this very pride that makes him look amazingly stupid today. However, he also admits when he is wrong. Posted on Dec 17 2008 While taking a moment to wish everyone a happy holiday season, I wanted to break away from the festivities for a moment to give everyone an update on the state of THEDON Boxing. Our 2009 season begins on January 14th with Fight Night at the Sabre Room. As of today, we are confident that this series will continue through 2009 and are making plans once again to begin trying to produce our FIGHT NIGHT TV show. While 2008 had its trying moments, THEDON finished strong and we head into the new year with the possibility of making the best events in amateur boxing even bigger next year. Thanks to our fans, friends and sponsors this event will be promoted on a wider scale than any other in this series. It is our hope that this will result in a banner crowd for our January 14th Anniversary Brawl. Posted on Dec 05 2008 It was a big night for fighters and fans alike with our year end Fight Night at the Sabre Room. Big wins by fighters like Jose Quezada and Jonathan Rios of Scottsdale Park as well as a spectacular performance by lightweight Frank Smith headed a fantastic ten bout card. The big crowd that turned out included sponsors like Joe's Italian Villa and Venetian Garden with their special RIngside tables, as well as new ticket locations like Murphy's Down Under and Liam and the boys from Cullen's Pub. A special moment for THEDON and promoter Don Lenza came when referee Sean Curtin was presented with the Jerry Lenza Memorial Boxing Award. "Sean," said Lenza, "much like previous winners Rick Fornuto and Sam Colonna, is a fixture in boxing. I owe my life in boxing to my dad, and these guys have been a part of that life for as long as I can remember. Sean is one of the reasons boxing continues today as a sport and also a part of the history of the sport. It is truly special when the historian adds to history himself." Posted on Feb 13 2008 I think too many folks are picking Pavlik, thinking this will be an easier bout than the 1st one. Had Taylor landed one or two more shots, we'd be talking about how great he is instead of "will he win". The weight difference from 160 to 168 tells me Pavlik, even if he loses, will keep his all important title, which will bring about another payday with Taylor (if Taylor wins). Pavlik has been with his coach since he was 9 years old, thru thick and thin, Taylor thought bringing in Emanual Steward was the answer, it wasn't. Now he's with HIS original trainer, perhaps this will bring him that little edge that he needed in the 1st bout. I remember Pavlik from the amateur regionals (we're both in Region 2), and his articles stating that when he fought black guys, how they would smile and state "I got me some white meat" which meant they had an easy victory..........until Pavlik handed them their heads......this kid is as tough as they come. I feel this is a nice payday for both fighters, I wonder if Taylor should of taken a tune-up bout before this. Any other day I would be laying the house on Pavlik, but for some reason, I see Taylor winning a close, maybe disputed decision, setting up the REAL fight, at 160 for Pavlik's title. Posted on Feb 13 2008 Not too many fights get us excited like this one, but we are forced to predict a winner as we talk about the showdown between Jermain Taylor and Kelly Pavlik this weekend. After careful consideration, it is THEDON's opinion that Pavlik will win by a late KO in Round 8. With the weight at a higher level, actually now a super middle showdown, Pavlik faces a slower, questionable Taylor who, without his title, the prospect of winning one, or any chance at being as big a star, faces only a hard fight against a man he knows can take his punch and come back and knock him out. I see Pavlik avoiding the traps of a counterpunching Taylor and a hard, not entirely clean fight. As the rounds pile up, Taylor weakens and eventually fades because A)his corner will not be able to advise him as to how to beat Pavlik: B)he will not feel as though he can finish Pavlik, who will be stronger with the extra weight and C)Pavlik, motivated by a championship heart and his desire to stay unbeaten champ, will prove too strong for a mentally and physically weaker Jermain Taylor than the first one. Posted on Aug 12 2007 The first annual Summer SlugFest featured some great bouts out in Lockport today, including stellar performances by many of amateur boxing's brightest stars from Scottsdale Park, Smak Fitness and the legendary Matadors. A special appearance by Louie Lomeli (who still looks like he could fight) brought fans to their feet, as did the action, which raised monies for Homer Athletics.
